Excalibur is probably the most famous film dedicated to the Arthurian legends and directly inspired by Thomas Malory.
The plot is simple because it is always the same. Uther has teamed up with Merlin the magician and the magician gives the Excalibur.
When Uther falls in love with Igraine, Merlin asked to use her magic but the magician will do so only if it can have their child's future in return. So when Arthur was born, Merlin took him away and entrusts him to Sir Ector.
Arthur grows and Uther is dead, stabbing his sword into a rock. At a tournament you miss Arthur's sword-brother Kay, and so pulls Excalibur from the rock, and become king.
Merlin conjures up images of him, to advise and help the new king and knights who defeated the rebels did not want it.
The story then proceeds with the Geneva meeting and Lancelot, the love between the two never consummated, the greedy Morgana to become a pupil of Merlin, and then accusing Geneva Gawain and Lancelot's adultery, which runs to defend it (becoming actually lover, soon after).
The rest is simple: between the betrayal of Morgana and the conception of Mordred, the quest for the Grail, the war between Arthur and Mordred, and their death.
The pros and cons
The film, of course, pros and cons. Among the qualities we find the entire story of Arthur. Let me explain in detail the film tells the life of Arthur, from conception to death, based on Thomas Malory, covering the most important events. Furthermore the characters of Arthur, Merlin, Mordred, Lancelot and Guinevere (she is a bit 'less) are very detailed (especially about the guilt of Arthur, after using the magic of Excalibur, and his depression after discovering the two lovers, and even the doubt and the love of Lancelot).
Among the defects are rather the absence of many characters, due to the fact that the film is long but it must also tell the many events and did not have the time to include other knights and ladies (Morgause, Bedivere, Agravaine etc.) .
The part relating to the castle and armor can be either a positive or a negative thing, depending on how each of us prefers to see the legends. The armor is clearly an exaggeration and are close to the historical, as do the magic and the castle.
Finally
The story is complete, with a little life of Arthur. A bit 'of childhood, a bit' of rgen, a little 'betrayal of the Geneva and a bit' of the Grail and the end. The main characters are described and are comfortable with their motives, without throwing enemies without meaning or good at Mulino Bianco.
The film is antiquated but always beautiful \u0026lt;3
